Last month we reported Sony’s announcement of a “Classic” version of the PlayStation – a Mini PS1, if you will. Much in the same vein as Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic Mini’s, this miniaturised version of the console will come with 20-games preloaded as well as two DualShock-less controls. At the time, they only announced five games – but now, we have the full deets thanks to a blog post by the Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Mary Yee.
Along with Final Fantasy VII, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms, we have the following:

Quite a list, and one that covers most genres. If fighting games are your jam, you’re well-covered thanks to the likes of Battle Arena Toshinden and of course Tekken 3, while car-game fans get games like Destruction Derby, Ridge Racer Type 4, Twisted Metal and even the original Grand Theft Auto – which is a lot more similar to its modern counterparts than you might expect.
Otherwise, the platforming genre is represented by Rayman, Abe’s Oddysee and (probably considered a platformer) Jumping Flash, and gun-game aficionados might be pleased to play Syphon Filter, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil: Director’s Cut. If puzzlers are your thing, there’s Mr Driller, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Intelligent Qube (arguably this lists most pleasant surprise) and if you’re a sporting fan – then, well, sorry. The closest you get is Cool Boarders 2.
Role players get Revelations: Persona, Wild Arms and Final Fantasy VII – but if they’re not enough, you may be interested to know that Japan is getting its own variant that focuses more on RPG’s and side-scrollers. Their version will instead include the likes of the Arc the Lad games, G Darius, Gradius Gaiden, Parasite Eve and SaGa Frontier. Other Japan-only oddities include the mecha, Armored Core as well as a puzzler called Devils Dice that was originally developed on the Net Yaroze. It was one of the few games developed on the homebrew development system that saw a commercial release.
While this list might not be for everyone, the vast amount of PS1 games out there (nearly 8000 at last count) and licencing issues need to be considered. I’m sure everyone had their perfect list figured out, but there was never any way that Sony could cater to everyone with just a list of twenty. Regardless, here’s hoping we eventually see a second version of this console but with DualShock controllers – and DualShock compatible games to go with it.

Growing up while the fifth generation of consoles reigned supreme meant that Brendan missed out on much of the 80’s and early 90’s of gaming the first time around.
