Welcome to Block’n’Bubble II, a direct continuation of the classic action gameplay developed by natthrafn. Originally programmed by the author and published in Germany back in 1989 via Markt & Technik Special #30, this updated iteration breathes fresh life into the retro title with enhanced features and an expanded universe. New features and upgrades include : A built-in Level Editor in which players can design, test, and share their own custom stages, two-Player Simultaneous Play, 20 new in-game levels plus 6 new level packs of 20 levels each on the included disk, and a high score table.

[embedded content]

The narrative picks up centuries after a disastrous magical mishap. At a grand annual wizard assembly, your character’s spectacular performance accidentally infested the guild’s headquarters with dangerous creatures known as Bubble-Jumpers. Despite successfully clearing the building with the help of peers, the guild ruthlessly expelled you. Now, 1,307 years later, you have broken back into the heavily guarded sanctuary to exact your revenge by exposing the wizards’ secret realm to humanity. To stop you, the Supreme Magician has cast the same forbidden spell, flooding the chambers with treacherous bubbles. Players must clear every room of these bouncing threats to open the gates for mankind.

Well, it’s that time of year again when we all suddenly become sci-fi nerds and amusingly misquote Star Wars for 24 hours, so to celebrate the geek in-joke turned global holiday that is Star Wars Day, we present you a brand new game for the C64 which is sure to excite many in the retro gaming community. Welcome to ‘Empire Strikes Back’ for the C64 by Megastyle; A Commodore 64 fan version of the original Parker Brothers game “Empire Strikes Back” which appeared on the Atari 2600 and the Intellivison way back in 1982!

While many of you probably remember Empire Strikes Back on the C64 which was released back in 1988 by Domark that relied on the heavy vector line graphical environment that so many of us were used to and enjoyed in the Arcades. This version however is a big nod to the classic Atari 2600 version, as a side scrolling shooter pitting a snow speeder against an army of AT-ATs in a bid to protect the rebel base on Hoth from attack!

Here is what the website says about this fabulous game for the C64 ” 40 years after the Atari and Intellivision games were released, Megastyle is now proud to present to you: The Commodore 64 fan version of the original Parker Brothers game “Empire Strikes Back”. In this version you have to protect the rebels power generators from the walkers – just like in the original Parker Brothers game. Only this time on a Commodore 64 and with 8 levels, new enemies, cut scenes and end sequence. ”

If you’ve never heard of Super Mario Kart, then I guess you were living in a cave, as this game series which first appeared in 1992 on the SNES, was one of the most addictive arcade style racing games ever to appear on a TV screen. So to see someone try to create a Mario Kart like experience on the Amiga certainly caught my interest! Welcome to Micro Karting, an ever improving proof-of-concept to see if a 3D-ish kart racing game can be done on Amiga AGA without cheating.

[embedded content]

Here’s the latest from bubu7te and JMD(Music). “Everything is written in raw 68020 assembly and tested on real hardware. It runs surprisingly well on a totally stock, unexpanded Amiga 1200, but with Fast RAM and/or an accelerator it gets smoother and more stable (less pain for the CPU). No engines, no system friendly code. Just chipset, fixed-point math, hand-rolled routines and a lot of guess-and-retry. The goal is not visuals, but gameplay feel: steering must stay responsive even when the machine is clearly sweating. Chunky to planar conversion is done using c2p.library, mainly to show how good and fast this free Amiga library actually is, even in a very demanding real-time scenario.”

This is not a finished game, not even close. It’s a tech demo, a playground, and a personal experiment to understand how far you can bend an Amiga before it snaps. Code is messy in places, optimizations are still half baked, and bugs are very possible. If it breaks, that’s on purpose. Kind of..”

UPDATE : The developer has made available a Tech Demo Version 3. Here is what he had to say in brief. ” In this new demo there are some very nice improvements: Music during the race, a real race timer, feedback from the track surface and now the circuit is not only visual! So if you go outside the track, the kart start to shake and you lose speed, so you really feel when you are doing a mistake.

Oh and the base game algorithm was further optimized and now the game is about 25% smoother than before.

This demo is focused to make the driving more “alive” and give more sensation from the road.”

Saberman has contacted us to let us know that tiboh’24-26 has announced the release of a hack/mod of Commando for the ZX Spectrum. A new version of the game which not only overhauls the intro graphics, but it now features AY-Music which brings it more in line with other systems such as the Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and Commodore 64. Not to be confused with the awesome Arnie flick of the same name (though equally as awesome), Commando is a ‘one man takes on all’ shooter (also like the awesome film) whereby it is your mission to kill anything that moves to progress to the next level.

[embedded content]

The classic vertical scrolling shoot-’em-up Commando has received a massive overhaul on the ZX Spectrum. A highly anticipated modification tailored for both 48k and 128k hardware has breathed fresh life into the iconic 1985 arcade port, delivering a heavily enriched presentation and a wealth of cross-platform bonuses. The game now features an alternative loading screen from Jarrod Bentley in the intro, intro’s GFX from Commodore 64, AY-Music from the Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and Commodore 64, and finally a congratulatory message at the end of 8th level!

Babaliba wasn’t the only classic game to be converted over to the Atari ST, as I’ve recently been told that the 1993 DOS game called Train, which is also very similar to another classic game called SNAKE. Has been converted over to the Atari ST by Slovak programmer Baky, with music by scener Tao. To coincide with this news, provided below is the latest footage showing this game that looks to be fun for all the family.

[embedded content]

Here’s the latest. “Train is a conversion of Miroslav Němeček’s original legendary DOS game from 1993. You drive the locomotive and collect objects on the screen. Once you pick up the object, the train enlarges by one wagon. After collecting all the items, you must take the train to the exit. The game contains 52 levels, compared to the original it has 2 extra bonus levels. Slovak programmer Baky is behind the conversion of the 2025 play for Atari, he used the music from scener Tao.”

Lets go back to the 90’s, a time of violent handball and ice hockey action, in which violence meets goal scoring antics that appeared in our homes on the Acorn Archimedes, Atari ST, Amiga, Amiga CD32, PC, Commodore 64, Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Game Boy and even the Game Boy Advance. Yes it is none other than Speedball 2, a 1990 game developed by Bitmap Brothers as the sequel to the 1988 game Speedball. So why am I mentioning this game you might ask? Well as of just recently a modernized version of this classic can be played through Steam.

[embedded content]

Here’s the latest “Speedball is a no-holds-barred arena sport pitting two teams head-to-head in a pulse-racing match-up requiring speed, agility and aggression. Seamless top-down arena gameplay meets classic sports strategy – with added violence! A new entry into the iconic Bitmap Brothers’ original series: venture into the grim future of 2138 where mega-corporations use Speedball to distract the downtrodden masses from their miserable lives. Once an underground sport reviled for its brutality, Speedball has risen to unprecedented heights of popularity and profitability. Do you have what it takes to dominate the arena and take your team to the top?”
