REVIEW:

Now the first question on some peoples mind is, “Why am I reviewing a game like this?” This is not a retro game. This is not an 8-bit game. We are confused. Are you that lonely?

Well, yes, I’m still single, so leave me alone. LOL. I needed some dating tips, leave me alone. LOL. But to be honest, there are real reasons to my madness. Let me explain.

Years ago, we were graced with some very awful yet cult classic games that attempted to use live action video technology. Not referring to the Dragon’s Lair franchise because those are awesome! But more of the Night Trap, Phantasmagoria, The 7th Guest games. The technology was just not yet ready for the times yet and some of the video segments turned out to be extremely awful in some or the acting was just too embarrassing to watch.

Enter Ten Dates from Wales Interactive. An interactive movie game that places you as either Misha or Ryan and takes you on a quest to meet your true love. You head to a bar and go on four speed dates to get to know someone it what truly seems like a real experience. During the date, you are faced with decisions to make of how the conversations will go or not go. In the end, you decide if there I anyone you would like to take on another date and try to get to know better.

The experience takes approximately 30 minutes to play and it doesn’t sit still. When the moment to decide what to do comes up, you are forced to choose what to do within approximately 10-15 seconds. Unlike playing other games, you can’t sit and make choices. Because of this, the video moves very flawlessly without any glitches or pauses. Also, to add to the experience, the acting is not bad at all. Two friends going to a bar to meet people….. It doesn’t get any more real than that. Although, the athlete, Toni, stretching at the table was a little awkward at first.

But back to why I even played and reviewed this game. Even though it is set in the current times and topics and there is no retro theme, it is the video quality improvements were what I was interested in, and it didn’t disappoint at all. It was flawless and glitches. It was like watching a tv show without the commercials.

Also the extreme no to the Choose Your Own Adventure concept was never lost from those old books and also Sierra games. The interactiveness of the game is very well laid out. You get to go to the persons profile to look more into their lifestyle to see if it matches what you are looking for.

If there is one complaint I have about this game, it’s wishing I tried this about a month before Valentines Day. I did try speed dating, and to be perfectly honest, it just sucked. After watching this game, I could have taken a few notes. But also watching the game shows that other companies should go back and redo their games to make them look as good as these did. There were no green-screens also. So it was more of an internal experience. Very entertaining!

The first time I played Tetris on the Macintosh, I became instantly addicted! This was a game that gave me every reason to sneak back into the journalism lab just to use the computer again and again. I truly believe it was because of the simplicity and complexity of the game.

Today, the game STILL holds its test of playability. To date there are close to 90 official versions of Tetris across several consoles, and an endless number of clones to count. Since time has passed, there is only one way to sum up some of the “best of the best” into an unforgettable package. Tetris Forever was recently released for multiple systems and has done a very good job of keeping me away from Fortnite. This game holds two levels of interest that I am happy to talk about…

Like the other releases from Digital Eclipse, Tetris Forever packs not only a handful of games throughout the history of Tetris, but also a detailed history of the game. Packed with interviews with Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of the game.

As of this past week, it is with heavy heart that iiRcade has announced that they have to close their doors and shut down their servers. This article is not to discuss the internal reasons for the doors closing because that has already happed last week and can be seen on YouTube and through the conversations through Facebook. But the reason for this post is that this week, the servers for iiRcade will be shut down permanently as of Friday June 23, 2023.

If you have an iiRcade unit and have purchased any games for it in the past and want to preserve the games on the machine, you need to go online within the next few days to re-download the games to your machine. If you have already paid for them, you do not have to pay for them again. Also, if there are games you wish to purchase, you do have the opportunity to still purchase games,

In addition to that, it is highly recommended to check EVERY game that you currently own on your system to see if there are any updates to download. There may also be system updates to be made to your system as well.

In the meantime, take a look at the pre-order project that is currently available to preserve the usage of the iiRcade after the servers are permanently shut down at https://thunderstickstudio.com/products/the-grs-ultimate-control-panel-for-iircade?fbclid=IwAR1iMoZtnsDioHFiEEZ5WSlqL-Xhxu44IlIHtPuHJ_OatSZeTtLQ8m-N2xs

You know, I was never a fan of Basketball. I couldn’t stand the squeaking of the sneakers. You have
to run back and forth the whole game long and I couldn’t do that more than twice. To top it off, I was a terrible shot. With video games it was the same thing. Also, it was always too strategic, like with all other sports games. There
was one game though that entered the arcade “FROM DOWNTOWN” and gave me hope for enjoying the game a little.

NBA JAM by Midway is a four-player basketball all-star game that is very similar in style to the Arch Rivals format, with the exclusion of pulling the pants down. Punching and pushing is still allowed, but goal tending is NOT! If a player makes three consecutive baskets, he/she would be considered “ON FIRE!” and every basket burns up in flames until the opponent makes a basket.

There were no green-screens also. So it was more of an internal experience. Very entertaining!

History has never been my favorite class in high school or college. I know there were very important facts, but flat out, I just couldn’t remember the dates and people involved… and it was boring. I needed a reason to stay
engaged. Years after my education, there is finally something that has captured my interest.

Recently released for the holiday season, the Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, compared to the previous Atari collections, proves to be the mother of all collections. This game is not only back memory after memory and I kept wanting more. I am not a fan of documentaries, but to see the old footage of Bushnell talking about Pong and Space Wars was just incredible!

A lot of times when you go into an arcade, there would be a game or two that you put a quarter in a game, play it once and then realize you really aren’t too crazy about it. This would have been one of those games if I didn’t have a Nintendo Switch. Let me explain.

Toki is one of those games that just has that weird look and feel that just didn’t want to make me play any more. He’s a monkey character with Donkey Kong like characteristics that jumped on. and over enemies, spikes and spit fireballs and also gets a football helmet for temporary invincibility. But he originally wasn’t a monkey.

The hero of this game is Toki. He used to be a man, but was turned into a monkey by the sorcerer, Vookimedlo, who kidnapped his girlfriend, Miho. Toki can spit to kill enemies or he can jump on their heads. There are also the usual end-of-level baddies. If the hero is hit, a life will be lost.

Unlimited continues are available on all levels except for the last where only 10 are allowed. If Toki fails to defeat Vookimedlo and save Miho, Miho will remain a prisoner of Vookimedlo forever and the game will end. However, if Vookimedlo is defeated and Miho is saved, Toki will become a man again and he and his girlfriend will be reunited. Afterwards, the game ends.

The game was incredibly frustrating when it was in the arcade. But when it finally came home, I developed a new love for the game. I think it was because I didn’t have to worry about adding any more quarters. I have played this game several times and have finished it several times for one reason only, IT IS FUN! It gives me a new challenge to try to finish or go as far as I can on one credit. After learning some of the patterns of the enemies, it can be done.

But now, it is is available for the iiRcade, and once again, Jong and his team have done an incredible job with the arcade conversion of a classic. So much that it starts to conflict me. It makes me wonder if I should stop using my switch to play games that are available for both that and the iiRcade. There is just something more satisfying about playing on the arcade machine version with the Sanwa joystick setup than on the little handheld setup. Because it gives you the fullest arcade experience you could possibly ask for. With the sound coming through that matches every blip and beep from the 80s. era, and also being able to change the scan lines of the game, similar to being able to change with any other game, the experience is unforgettable and makes you want too go back for more! It’s not a very long game to play. But it is still a fun game to play, an to me withe this title, THAT is what matters!

Now for my next review, I’d like to return to the classics. If you go back to where it all started with video games, well you’ve gone too far. But never forget where it did start. No, I am talking about the one game that made my eyes go wide and sparkle, my hands shake back and forth, and my reflexes tested to the best of their ability, at that age. I am talking about Space Invaders. This is the one game that, if you talk to video game enthusiasts, somewhere in the conversation, this game would be brought up. And thanks to iiRcade, it’s being brought up again in full force!

In 2021, when iiRcade announced Space Invaders was coming to the iiRcade, everyone lost their minds. But the next question that got everyone asking was, when? When was this classic going to be released and why was it taking so long? The first question was never really answered. But the second one did get more of an explanation.

Taito, the distributor of Space Invaders, worked very closely with iiRcade to make sure that every detail of the game was covered to ensure the best conversion of the game. From the sound of the aliens going back and forth, to the look and feel of the original, the goal is to replicate everything. In the meantime, we waited and kept getting other titles. But in the end, the wait was worth it.

This is the first time my childhood flashbacks at the arcade came back in full force. There are a lot of replicated versions of this game, but I am sorry to say that they just don’t match up to the iiRcade version. Let’s just start with the graphics.

From the time that the game loads up, it matches everything that you know and love from the original, but with a hint of more. This game doesn’t just come with the standard black and white original 1978 version. This game will give you options to choose from, and not just at the beginning of the game but throughout the game on the fly moment. You are able to change the background to show the classic arcade bezel, the green base blockers and the color version. I lost several games while switching back and forth with the push of a controller button. The screen and the graphics changed so quickly without interrupting the gameplay at all.

But let’s talk about the actual game control for a moment as well. Yes, the iiRcade is trademarked for having an outstanding Sanwa arcade stick control. And they should! So the movement of your gunner is completely smooth. The firing button is also very well responsive. Just as responsive as the actual arcade control. However, there are some people who miss playing the game like the original version with the left and right button.

Problem solved. The iiRcade setup two of the buttons to allow you to play classic mode to get you in every mood of playing in the 70’s. Every mark of the controlling was hit just right. The button controlling is just as smooth as witjh the Sanwa joystick.

Then there is the sound. Yes, the sound back then was pretty lame, and the only way they could catch your attention was by turning it up and not ruining the speakers. Again, thanks to the iiRcade, the sound makes the game more intense as the aliens are going back and forth. And the second the ufo starts to fly across, anticipation starts to kick in. This game was played on the original iiRcade. I can ONLY imagine what type of impact the sound is on an iiRcade GOLD with JBL speakers. But the speakers I have, are still awesome enough.

Space Invaders is a MUST have for anyone who has an iiRcade machine. I can’t emphasize how much I highly recommend it. It is a perfect addition to anyone’s game library. The only downside to this game was the wait time to get it out. However, this must be kept in mind for this or ANY game that is due to come out or is delayed. Rome wasn’t built in a day, Babies aren’t born an hour later, and bread doesn’t rise in 5 seconds…except in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The point is, Jong and his team are perfectionists! They want to make sure that everything is done and done correctly. They also want the blessings of the companies that originally make the games. And for that, some things are well worth the wait!

That should be enough for us; we are ready for the next product… Actually, not quite. With some companies, a product is released and then they move on, but not iiRcade. While they are currently working on the release
of the Gold edition machines, they are also working on adding little touches to the original classic that was released a year and a half ago. Coming soon to not only the iiRcade Gold,
but the iiRcade classic, will be the ability to add extra arcade
control accessories.

The new initiative will allow the use of off-the-shelf gaming accessories that are compatible with iiRcade devices using two USB controller attachment ports underneath the front of the control deck area on the new Gold Editions and Bluetooth connectivity for the Classic and Gold Editions of iiRcade. At launch, trackballs, and spinners compatible with the system will be the…
