When referring to flight simulator video games, we are talking about a simulation of a flight environment for non-official flight training and more as a form of entertainment or “edutainment.” Flight simulator video games could involve simulation of commercial flights, military combat, or even spacecraft control.

The earliest flight simulators were arcade-type games that appeared in the 70’s. Sega produced one of these early titles, which was called Jet Rocket (released in 1970) which featured cockpit controls. This simulator allowed the player to control…

This article is a follow-up to my Donkey Kong on Atari article published in Issue 31 of this magazine. That article was limited to home versions of Donkey Kong released for Atari systems during the commercial life of the systems, so no homebrew versions or versions for other consoles were covered. This article will explore those additional ports, from the original releases to newer homebrews. If you’d like to read more about the history of the arcade game, I recommend you refer back to my original article. Having said that, let’s start covering more of that pesky gorilla…

Given the limitations of Coleco’s version of Donkey Kong, two homebrew programmers took it upon themselves to develop improved versions of the game for the 2600. The first homebrew port, D.K. VCS, was released by Joe Musashi in 2012. This port takes a unique approach by only having part of each screen show….

In 1978, Taito/Midway took the arcades by storm with their release of a game called Space Invaders. The game was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado, who spent a year developing the game itself as well as the hardware necessary to make the game possible. His concept gave the players the ability to fire a laser into moving enemies, making this the first fixed shooter that became one of the most recognized and influential video games ever.

This makes the aliens move closer to the player’s cannon, making it necessary to eliminate all of them before they reach the ground. Should even one alien make it to the ground, the game ends regardless of how many lives the player may have left. There are five rows of eleven aliens to deal with (55 aliens). As the player shoots the aliens and fewer of them are on the screen, their speed increases…

In November 1979, Atari, Inc released a monochromatic vector game to the arcades with the name Asteroids. The game, programmed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg, is a multi-directional shooter in which the player controls a vessel that appears in the middle of an asteroid f ield with the goal of destroying all of the asteroids without being hit by any of them. But you are not alone in the asteroid field, flying saucers also are in the field and these will try to destroy you as well. It is either destroy or be destroyed!

The ship controlled by the player is triangular shaped and rotates right and left. It is capable of shooting a laser forward as well as thrust forward. To emulate real space physics, the ship will continue moving in any given direction unless the player thrusts again in a different direction or stops the ship’s motion. The ship also has the ability to do a hyperspace jump; however, the player does not control where the ship reappears and runs the risk of appearing on top of an asteroid, leading to immediate destruction. I should note that the player controls the ship with buttons to make the ship turn, fire, or thrust.

The year was 1982. I went to Time Out, my local arcade, and there I found my cousin playing this new game where a cook had to make burgers while avoiding hot dogs, pickles, and other food items. That game was BurgerTime and I was immediately hooked! BurgerTime was first released in Japan under the name Hamburger by Data East. The game was originally developed for the Data East DECO Cassette System in Japan. When the game was brought to the US, it was licensed to Bally Midway for distribution but later was released by Data East themselves.

Though Peter has a limited number of pepper shots, he can acquire additional pepper by picking up certain items that appear towards the center of each maze. These items include ice cream, coffee, and French fries. These appear only for several seconds and must be picked up before they disappear in order to get the extra pepper as well as bonus points…

In 1980, Stern Electronics released a multidirectional shooter game with the title Berzerk. This game was programmed by Alan McNeil and it was among the first games to use voice synthesis. Mr. McNeil stated he came with the idea of the game after having a dream in which he had to fight robots. He also named the game after the Berserker series of science fiction novels by Fred Baberhagen.

In Berzerk, the player controls a stick-figure man who is in a set of mazes that are full of robots who are in the hunt for “the humanoid.” To advance from one maze to the next, the player must escape through one of the openings located in the maze (usually opposite to where the player enters or on either the top or bottom of the maze) while destroying the robots in them. The player character has a laser weapon that can be fired in eight directions. The game has 876 unique maze layouts but there are 65,536 rooms to play through! The player can be killed if shot by any of the robots, by hitting an exploding robot, by hitting the electrified maze walls….
