On April 14th, John Romain made his Starlight Edition a slimline. Today, on April 28th, we’re officially opening pre-orders for the Commodore 64C Ultimate – which we’ve been planning for a long time. Congrats John, that was one race well run!

We’re estimating delivery by late 2026 (yes, for the initial production batches, we’re guaranteeing delivery by

‘Breadbin’ & ‘Slimline’

The year was 1986. Commodore had just launched the Amiga and Commodore 128. Millions of 64 owners were concerned they’d be left behind. Reports were that Commodore shut down the 64 assembly line multiple times. But each time, the demand demanded the production line be restarted.

Enter the C64C. A Commodore 64 in a sleek, new housing, resembling the more modern Commodore 128. At the time, our friends at Compute!’s Gazette said “A new look for an old friend.”* Also, “The 64 refuses to die.”** Now 44 years since its initial release, we say “confirmed!” to that.

The Commodore C64 was a great little machine for its day, and its games were worthy successors to the Atari games which came before it. One game will always stand out for me as particularly enjoyable, due to its innovative concept, progression, style, and overall replayability: Paradroid.
Paradroid stood out due to its innovative concept, first and foremost; it managed to turn on its head a trope that usually stood for the villains in stories and movies. Have you ever seen the film where the bad guy is able to take over minds of unwitting bystanders, make them do their bidding, and then discard them? Particularly heinous is the villain who treats the innocents under his control like a series of rental cars with unlimited insurance, able to wreck them at will in pursuit of his nefarious goals.
Paradroid is that movie, except now, you’re the good guy, and the bystanders are evil robots.
Interested?
So was I.
The game started with a humble little number ‘001’ wrapped in a white circle. Maybe it’s the right-brainer in me, but those two zeroes looked like a couple of sad, semi-scared eyes; this fellow was a little guy in a playground of big boys and he knew it.
Next, the controller made you feel this was a bot, swooping, slowing in a turn, and making me think this was the ultimate in levelling-up as I grabbed other bots and moved up the proverbial ladder.
Grabbing other bots was more than holding down the right button and blasting them, or crashing into them and hoping for the best. The mini-game took the form of a circuit grid, one in which you had a quickly spinning timer and finite number of ‘shots’ to make the thing into your ‘bot’s color. Success meant you’d leveled up and taken something [hopefully] more powerful than your last ‘bot. Failure meant you were demoted back to the scared little 001, a lonely floating helmet trying to clear out the ship of automatons before you got shot or ran out of juice.
Or, if you were already that scared little ‘bot, you blew up. BEWM!
And just to keep the tension on: even if you won, you couldn’t hold a robot forever. There was no ‘I’m in a locked room, so I’ma-gonna-geta-sammich-an’-be-back-later’ interlude. No pause button, no save button, you just kept going. And if you help your ‘bot too long, you started to softly ‘blink’ from dark to light as another timer limited the length you could control your unwilling host.
So, it was a constant sense of danger, always wondering what was around the corner. Or even worse: I just grabbed an 800-series ‘bot! Cool! It’s a dalek from Dr. Who! Uh-oh; I’m fade-blinking, and…crud! There’s only a 200-series garbage ‘bot to grab! Do I trade down now, or look for something even better and risk losing the 883/Dalek and dropping back to the beginning as a 001 helmet! What do I do?
The only disappointment for me: There was no ‘end screen’. I’d clean out the whole starship, and then get transferred to the ‘Metahawk’ and have to start all over again. Rumor had it there were eight or a dozen more ships, all with the same layout. You never got to ‘finish’ and you never got to save the crew who’d sent the initial distress call, a bummer.
Despite this, the game went on to win about a gazillion awards since its ‘85 release and inspire a number of reboots and clones. Paradroid is still a classic in the annals of old school gaming, and will always be my favorite C64 game.
Now, if I could just hang onto that 999 command cyborg a little longer…

See an extended playthrough:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EXsfYQOFpI

Christmas is here and you’d expect to see lots of Christmas themed games appearing on Indie Retro News in the lead up to the 25th. Well that’s certainly happening this week, as the first game to be mentioned on our site is a Christmas game by Vector5games for the C64 called ‘Santa’s Workout ‘; a brand new Commodore 64 puzzle game in which you need to help Santa to the exit using a limited amount of iced blocks.

[embedded content]

Video Link for Mobile Users

Santa’s Workout is a fun for all the family festive game that requires you the player to help Santa to the exit by collecting sacks of gifts and building blocks of ice. Not only does the game feature 24 exciting yet challenging puzzle levels with different layouts, but there is a limited of blocks you can use that has to be replenished with sacks of gifts! Thankfully if you’re stuck the game has a password system so you can reload a level or challenge a friend to beat your hi-score. So yes certainly an enjoyable game to experience before Christmas, and more so when the game will run in PAL and NTSC modes!

We’ve featured many Atari 2600 to C64 and Atari XL/XE conversions and ports throughout the years, from Spider Fighter, to Keystone Kapers and even our personal favorite Frostbite. Well here’s some more good news to get us through this Tuesday which has been developed by Glurk, is the Atari 2600 to Atari XL/XE conversion/port of Freeway; a video game written by David Crane for the Atari 2600 and published by Activision in 1981, in which you need to get your chicken(s) across the road as many times as possible for a high score.

[embedded content]

Video Link for Mobile Users

In Freeway you have 136 seconds to get your chicken across the road as many times as possible. When there are less than 8 seconds left the scores will flash. There are various levels to play with different amounts and speeds of traffic, and two difficulty settings. Do be aware however unlike the C64 port which was released by Arlasoft, this version gives you the option to choose a level, and set the difficulty for each player!

Even more retro games to get through now, as thanks to a late hour heads up from Saberman, we’ve just been told LC-Games has released the new C64 game of ‘Tutankham’; A C64 port of Tutankham which was originally an Arcade game developed by Konami in 1982. To coincide with this news, not only is there a new video to view below or linked here, but this game works perfectly on both PAL and NTSC models with game speeds similar to the Arcade version if using an NTSC model.

[embedded content]

Here is what the website description says about the game : In this brand new release of Tutankham for the C64, the player controls an explorer who is robbing Tutankhamun’s tomb. The player will search for precious treasures (maps, lamps, chests of gold & jewels, and, above all, the golden mask of King Tut) and fight off the various creatures that guard the tomb to ultimately find the way through the catacombs. So yes certainly a game worthy of a download of which you can try out via the link below.

Another C64 news story for you all, and one I think many will still be interested in playing when it gets an eventual release, is the upcoming game of Knights & Slimes for the C64 by Monte Boyd. Yes indeed thanks to another shout out on Twitter, not only is Monte Boyd still working on his new arcade platformer for the C64, but the creator behind the game has has recently released some new footage showing a few level layouts, Music and SFX (WIP) and the first powerup – lightning bolt.

Although the creator has shown some more footage above which looks to be an Arcade platformer as you play as a knight popping slimes across multiple levels. The developer has stuck to his word thus far as he did say previously that he is hoping to turn the game into something more throughout the next few months, and will then move on to bigger projects. Hence the latest developments from the previous showing……And that’s pretty much all we have on the game so far, but as soon as we know more including features, we will make sure to do a much bigger article on IRN in the near future!

Even more C64 games to get through today, as trawling through the CSdb database we’ve come across a new C64 game as a preview called ‘Riviera Story’ by Bladawietz(?). This game available to try, looks to be an Arcade platformer in which you play as Fred and must survive deadly trials by avoiding enemies, collecting beer and replenishing your supply in the allotted time. To coincide with this news not only can you play the preview, but some gameplay footage has been made available viewable below.

[embedded content]

Here is what was said in brief about the preview in the loading screen. Although you cannot complete the game as it’s not finished yet, at least in the latest preview you can at least visit one of the levels as a teaser to the full game. In regards to the full version you will have to survive 2:00 in every 10 torment chambers while not only avoiding everything that moves which will kill you, including the flames, but you must maintain your beer level above 0% to survive. And that’s just a small snippet from the preview description, but for further there’s a download available linked below.

It wasn’t too long ago that many of us had the pleasure of playing Allan Turvey’s Terrapins RX; a Rally X Remix demo which was based on the 1980 game by Namco and official conversion Maze Death Race which was released later in 1983 by PSS for the ZX Spectrum 16K! Well it’s time for the C64 to get in on the Rally fun, as thanks to Saberman contacting us today, he has told us that Jake79 with music by Merman is working on a brand new Arcade conversion of Rally-X for the C64 called “New Rally-X”.

[embedded content]

Video Link for Mobile Users

The original game Rally-X was an overhead maze game released in the 1980’s by Namco in which you drove around a maze like screen collecting flags for a high score and avoiding other cars or well play placed rocks. This latest version however by Jake79 is not only coming on really nicely and sounds fantastic even at this preview stage, but the game is well on its way to completion, and we may have a final version in the near future. So yes if you loved the Arcade classic of Rally-X it might be worth trying out the latest preview from Jake available below!

Yes indeed if you thought the original version was flawed in anyway, as I know many thought it was down right crap. You’ll be overjoyed to know this work in progress version of Street Fighter 2 should bring it as close as possible to the Arcade, staying within the limits of the C64. Which means it should have fast animation, great fighting movies, multiple character choices and much much more to make this a great version of Street Fighter 2. So yes certainly an interesting heads up ( we also featured it some years back ) but even more so you can try the first release as a demo right now!

What a great December this is turning out to be and it looks like the C64 goodness hasn’t finished with us yet. As trawling through Facebook, we have just found out that the previously announced in development game of ‘Polar Bear in Space!’ is now available for download via Psytronik Software and RGCD. For those who didn’t follow our previous write up, this is an absolutely stunning game in which you take control of an extremely cute Polar Bear in a quest to run, jump and zap through various alien-infested levels whilst collecting krystals.

(This video contains flashing lights and other visual patterns, which may trigger seizures for those with photosensitivity issues)

Polar Bear is stranded in space! Having found a nearby alien space station on his quest for home, he must now locate the secret underground transporter and collect the 99 krystals needed to operate it. Only then can he escape! The game features a super-slick presentation, an incredibly cute main character, platforming and space shooting action, superb soundtracks, support for keyboard and two/three-button (POTX/POTY) controllers, TheC64 Mini/Maxi compatible, and finally available as a digital download and boxed edition linked below!
