Twenty champions you do not own are sitting in your champion select right now, and they vanish on Tuesday. The League of Legends free champion rotation is a weekly set of free champions that any account at summoner level 11 or above can play without spending Blue Essence or Riot Points. It resets every Tuesday, runs identically on every Riot-operated server, and it is the most underused feature in the game.
What Is the Free Champion Rotation?
It is a schedule of champions available for everyone to play without needing to purchase them with Riot Points or Blue Essence. Riot Games runs it for two reasons. The first is try-before-you-buy: nobody wants to spend a week of Blue Essence income on a champion they bounce off in two games. The second is keeping free-to-play accounts viable, because a starting roster of three or four owned champions makes for a miserable game.
How the LoL Free Champion Rotation Works
Twenty champions run for one week, and the list is the same in every Riot-operated region. The rotation occasionally shows 21 when a brand-new champion is folded in. That figure has moved over the years, which is why half the trackers online are wrong: the free rotation grew from a flat 10 to 14 champions in patch V7.16 when Riot pegged the size to roughly 10% of the roster, then to 15 in September 2019, and it sits at 20 today. Any page still telling you 14 or 16 has not been touched in years.
It Resets Every Tuesday
One rotation lasts exactly seven days. Do not confuse this with the patch cycle, which lands roughly every two weeks, so the two calendars drift in and out of sync constantly. The swap happens on regional server time, which means the reset can land on a Monday evening or a Wednesday morning depending on where you live. Extended maintenance and holiday schedules can nudge it by a few hours.
You Need Summoner Level 11
Level 11 is the gate for the standard 20-champion rotation. Below that, new accounts get a separate, fixed beginner rotation built from straightforward champions such as Malphite, Jinx, Leona, and Sona, which Riot refreshes only occasionally rather than weekly. That level gate is also why some players skip the early grind entirely and pick up a ready-made League of Legends account from a marketplace like BoostRoyal instead of leveling one from scratch.
Where You Can Play the Free Champions
Normal queues, casual modes, and ARAM, yes. Ranked, no. If you want a champion in Solo/Duo or Flex, you own it, or you do not play it. ARAM is the generous exception: the Howling Abyss pool stacks the current rotation on top of the previous four, which works out to about 90 free champions at any given time, capped around 100.
How Riot Picks the Champions in Each Rotation
The selection is semi-random but clearly weighted. Each week’s list spreads across lane, jungle, mid, and support so every position has options, mixes in a fighter or two, and leans on accessible kits rather than stacking five hardest-in-the-game picks. With 20 of the current roster free at once, roughly 11 to 12% of the game is available for everyone to play.
New champions join the rotation in the third week following release, though Riot has broken that pattern before. Champions also get left out when a list is put together: a pending rework or a balance problem can keep a champion off the rotation before it goes live. A free week is also the cheapest way to check whether a champion like Karma still fits how you actually play.
How to Check the Free Champion Rotation This Week
Two routes in the client. The Play screen carries a rotation panel showing the current free champion rotation list at a glance. For the full view, open Collection, choose Champions, and filter by ownership to free-to-play, which shows exactly which champions are free alongside everything you already own. Champion select also tags rotation picks, though that is a late place to find out.
Outside the client, weekly tracker sites publish the current rotation within minutes of the reset, and rotation archives let you scroll back through previous weeks to see how often a champion has cycled through.
Getting the Most Out of the Free Rotation
If You’re New
Use the free rotation to learn the game by role, not by champion. Pick one free champion per position and play it four or five games in a row instead of one game each, because a single match tells you nothing except whether you got stomped. You will learn the basics of jungle pathing or support roaming without spending anything, then commit Blue Essence to the role that actually clicked.
If You Already Have a Main
Test your off-role and your counter-picks before a patch forces the issue, and use free weeks to cover the champions that get banned out from under you. Before you purchase anything, set a bar: five games minimum, then check your mastery grade and your win rate on that champion, not whether the ability animations felt fun. If you want a wider champion pool without the grind, marketplaces such as igitems list League accounts with sizeable rosters already unlocked.
