When The Super Mario Bros. Movie came out in 2023, it was an instant hit, much to the pleasure of both fans and Nintendo. A Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel was expected, but apart from confirming its existence, Nintendo and animation studio Illumination have been notably silent. Now, it seems, we have a potential title for the next Super Mario Bros. Movie, thanks to a slip-up by parent company, NBCUniversal.
Rumored Title for Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel is Super Mario World
According to a press release published by NBCUniversal that has since been edited, it seems like Mario’s universe will continue to expand in the planned follow-up film, with the sequel simply being dubbed Super Mario World. This title was inserted alongside other films under NBC Universal’s umbrella that are slated for release soon, including How to Train Your Dragon, Nobody 2, and more. Apart from being a better title than the previous movie, this new supposed title instantly evokes more nostalgia for dedicated fans. If this new title is to be believed, the sequel shares the title with the Super Nintendo classic, widely regarded as one of the best 2D Super Mario games of all time.
As one of the top five highest-grossing animated movies of all time, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made the studios a lot of money, but they’ve smartly taken the proper time to ensure a solidly made sequel. Nintendo is no stranger to the unforgiving world of film, as the 1993 live-action version of Super Mario Bros. was infamously panned and deemed a box-office bomb, so their hesitation to release a quick cash-in comes from experience. That said, with other animated video game movies like A Minecraft Movie performing just as well at the box office, it’d be equally intelligent to strike while the iron is hot.
Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long for the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, as the Super Mario World movie release date is relatively soon. As stated by Shigeru Miyamoto in a social media post last year, the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel will be released on April 3, 2026.
Super Mario World Movie Plot and Characters Speculation
Beyond that, not much else is known about the details of the Super Mario World movie. Per The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel IMDb page, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning to co-direct the movie, with writer Matthew Fogel penning the script once again. No voice actors or characters have been confirmed to return, though it’s a safe assumption that Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser will have significant screen time. With the new Donkey Kong Banaza Nintendo Switch 2 game coming out this summer, I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Kong family makes a return, but we’ll have to wait and see what’s in store. The title of Super Mario World also instantly brings Yoshi to mind, and this would be a perfect time to introduce this fan-favorite dino, but I’m not getting my hopes up yet.
It’s important to note that the title of the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel has not been officially announced, and though the source of this accidental leak is valid, the Super Mario World title is only a rumor. Other titles have been passed around, like The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, but Super Mario World or Super Mario World: The Movie does sound quite marketable and catchy. We look forward to a potential Super Mario Bros sequel trailer, but until then, the hype train continues to chug along.
