As any regular visitor to our site will know, the world of retro gaming is in rude health at the moment.

Many devices designed for old-school gaming have been released in recent years, while classic experiences like slot machines have also been effectively reimagined for the digital age with state-of-the-art graphics and audio. Furthermore, while so many elements of gaming have gone online, some traditional offline pastimes like board games and card games continue to prove popular.

However, it is not just experiences inspired by yesteryear which are doing well at present, as some of gaming’s greatest icons are also still going strong.

Tomb Raider Reloaded

The likes of Mario and Sonic have made a notable splash in mobile gaming in recent years, but the latest famous character set to star in a new handheld title is none other than the Tomb Raider herself – Lara Croft.

Towards the end of November, sites including CBR.com reported on the announcement that Square Enix London Mobile and Emerald City Games have been working on Tomb Raider Reloaded. Set to be released on mobile next year, the game will be a free-to-play action-arcade title and there are signs that it will include many of the elements we have come to know and love about Lara’s adventures through the years.

As CBR.com details, the trailer includes hints that the icon will be tackling all kinds of fiends, including rock trolls and dinosaurs, in the new title.

An exciting new chapter

The upcoming game is of course just the latest exciting chapter in the story of Lara Croft. As Business Insider’s history of the character explains, she first made her debut in the original Tomb Raider all of the way back in 1996 and has since gone on to star in countless titles. She has also featured in other mobile games as well, with Square Enix’s Lara Croft GO being a notable example. The Google Play listing for the title outlines how it has enjoyed a huge amount of recognition, including being named the best mobile/handheld game at The Game Awards 2015.

Lara Croft is even one of a handful of video game characters to successfully make the move into more surprising areas, such as slot games. As Royal Panda’s site highlights, there are a whole host of slot machine experiences available online these days, with titles being based around all kinds of themes. Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs sits on the site alongside similar gaming-inspired titles such as Hitman, while the likes of Jurassic World, Game of Thrones and Highlander are among the other titles which reference key names from pop culture.

Of course, any discussion about the impact and popularity of Lara Croft should not pass without a reference to her big screen resume. The character has featured in several big screen outings down the years and another is thought to be in the pipeline. However, sites including Empire did recently highlight that the movie – which will be directed by Ben Wheatley – has been delayed indefinitely.

Success in many areas

Although we might have to wait for the next cinematic adventure, it is good to know that Lara Croft fans have a new mobile title to look forward to in 2021. The character is undoubtedly a true icon of video gaming and it is great to see her continue to enjoy plenty of success in a range of areas many years after her debut.

It will be intriguing to see what Tomb Raider Reloaded has in store when it launches, while we are sure the character will be back for more adventures in the future too.
