When Sega Heard the World Wanted a New Retro Mini, They Took it Literally

Admittedly, Sega has one of the most desirable backlog of hardware and game libraries due for the retro mini treatment (Master System, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast) so when rumors of new hardware began floating about, the retro community at large was feverish with anticipation.

Sadly it looks like we’re going to have to wait a bit longer for that Saturn Mini but in the meantime meet the Sega Game Gear Micro.

This little gadget is available for preorder now on Amazon.jp and coincides with the company’s June 3rd 60th anniversary.  It retails for roughly $50 and comes available in 4 color options: Black, red, yellow and blue.  However, this is no mere cosmetic choice situation as each of the different colored shells will come packed with 4 different games from the Game Gear library (full breakdown below).

BLACK

Sonic the Hedgehog
Puyo Puyo 2
Out Run
Royal Stone

RED

Revelations: The Demon Slayer
Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
The GG Shinobi
Columns

YELLOW

Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei – Jashin no Kuni he
Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
Nazopuyo Aruru no Ru

BLUE

Sonic Chaos
Gunstar Heroes
Sylvan Tale
Baku Baku Animal

Living up to is moniker, this thing is TINY!  We’re talking keychain novelty status with a 1.15″ full color display.  Yet even with so small a form factor, all of the buttons and inputs are fully functional – and yes it contains a mono speaker, stereo headphone jack, USB-rechargeable battery pack and the ability to run off a pair of AAAs as well.

They are expected to release on October 6th though as of yet there has been no official North American plans.  So if you’ve got to get one (or all of them as Sega is surely hoping), Amazon of Japan is your only option.
