Well, I now know what I want for Christmas. Obviously inspired by Nintendo’s success with their mini NES and SNES Classic consoles, Sony is taking a punt at the concept with their own PlayStation (the original).
Originally released on the 3rd of December, 1994 in Japan before selling over 100 million units, its miniaturised sibling will also see a release date of the 3rd of December (this year), making it quite the anniversary present. All in all, 20-games will be included and while these are all yet to be announced, so far Sony has let loose about Final Fantasy VII, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms. It’s assumed that the rest of the selection will be highly curated too, ensuring newcomers to the console will get a scrumptious taste of it’s all about while veterans of the system will receive those warm nostalgia feels.
So, what about the hardware its self? For one, it will be approximately 45% smaller than the original grey beast (so probably even smaller than the PSone variant) and will come with two controllers, as well as HDMI and USB cables. There will be no power brick, however, just like Nintendo’s Mini’s. It should be noted that the controllers are based on the pre-DualShock models – so there are no thumbsticks and you can probably assume there will be no vibration either.
Otherwise, there are the three buttons on the console and all are operational. Besides from the on/off button (which of course retains the same function) the ‘open’ button lets you “virtually change disc” (so, goes to a menu, I guess?) while the ‘reset’ button “suspends” the gameplay. It hasn’t been specified yet as to what that actually means, as you’d assume all games would let you pause using the Start button on the controller anyway. Maybe it’s a pause on more of a hardware level? Only time will tell.
