Earlier today, Maiden of the Dark launched its Kickstarter campaign. The action platformer for the Game Boy is the first indie project from TigerChainsaw Studios, which is headquartered in Milwaukee. Led by TigerChainsaw, the four-person team also includes RetroRoo, PixelChunga, and OGM. Maiden of the Dark is an action platformer in the style of games like Operation C and Return of the Ninja, starring the titular Japanese spirit who is summoned by villagers to protect them against a warlord’s army.

The requested funding for the project, $10,000, is not to actually produce the Maiden of the Dark, which is nearly finished and has an expected delivery date of December 2025 if the project is funded. Rather, the main purpose of the campaign appears to be to gauge interest for physical copies of the game by calling for preorders. The final digital ROM file alone requires a $25 contribution. A physical cartridge playable on Game Boys or similar devices like the Chromatic goes for $40. A fully boxed copy costs $60. A box in addition to a physical audio CD of the soundtrack costs $75. Finally, the highest tier including all of the above, as well as a poster, a personal thank you letter from TigerChainsaw, and the contributor’s name in the credits, costs $125.

As of this writing, Maiden of the Dark has already raised $2,655 dollars off of 29 backers. The final tier and the boxed tier are by far the most popular options, accounting for 85% of backers. The Kickstarter campaign for Maiden of the Dark will continue until December 4th. A demo version of the game can be accessed here.
