On July 10th, ModRetro released several new products to its online shop, modretro.com. The most colorful of the set is a new colorway for the Chromatic handheld. The Cloud version of the Chromatic is physically identical to the existing six Chromatic handhelds save for its white sheen. Like those handhelds, the Cloud Chromatic also comes bundled with the ModRetro version of Tetris.
ModRetro is also offering five new games for the handheld, which can also be played on Game Boy Color hardware. One of these games, Sabrina: Zapped! is strictly speaking a rerelease. Based on the Sabrina the Animated Series, Sabrina: Zapped was first released in 2000 by WayForward. Sabrina: Zapped! bears many similarities to retro wonder Shantae from the same studio, but due to its status as a licensed game, is unknown relative to its younger sister.
The other four releases are modern Game Boy games produced by independent studios. These include Gravitorque DX, a souped-up version of the puzzle platformer Gravitorque by nikalego. First Contact Protocol by Game Boy developer Ben Jelter is also available for sale. The metroidvania style sidescroller Wicked Plague by Locus-motion is the third independent release, and the robot platformer Self Simulated by Martin Gauer rounds out the the full selection. All five games retail for $39.99 as a cartridge.
ModRetro has also released three new accessories. These include a rechargeable power core eliminating the need for AA batteries for $29.99, a link cable that can be used to connect multiple Chromatics and similar devices for multiplayer play for $14.99. Lastly, there’s a mod kit for $14.99 allowing players to swap out individual components of the Chromatic as per personal preference.
