This is a golden era for gamers, a time where the choice of themes seems almost infinite. No matter what the genre might be, whether it’s fantasy, sport, combat or something else, the range of titles has risen exponentially over the last 30 years or so.

Perhaps the biggest beneficiaries of the new digital age were the fantasy and action genres. One of the main reasons for this is the development of technology which improved the graphics beyond recognition. There are lots of positive examples including Crash Bandicoot and Call of Duty but perhaps the biggest change came with Final Fantasy. Look at the crude graphics of 1987 before comparing them to 2016’s version and it looks to be a completely different game.
That ability to create new and exciting themes leads to a host of new titles being released every year. For 2019, the fantasy genre has brought us some thrilling new entries including Ashen, Dragon Marked for Death, Persona 5 and many more. If we look at the action and war themes, we could add Gates of Hell, Terminal Conflict, Valor and Victory plus a host of other titles to the list.

That’s an increase of over $26 billion in just one year and it highlights the capacity of the sector to build even further.
The concept of choice is behind these impressive numbers. We’ve seen how certain themes have benefitted from the revolution in technology that has allowed them to grow and introduce a host of new titles. As that technology builds, that choice will continue to expand, and the figures will hit even greater heights in the years that lie ahead.
