One thing that I have noticed about video game documentaries is that it turns into “Six Degrees of Iowa”. Every one of the movies I have seen always links back to Ottumwa, Iowa. And it should because that is where Walter Day started Twin Galaxies. But even better, it is the home of another video game record breaker.
Man vs. Snake follows the story of Timothy McVey and his quest to beat the high score for Nibbler. We already know what your first question will be… TIMOTHY McVEY?!?!?! No, not the evil Timothy McVey. This guy is a humble video game player from Iowa. But the next question is always, “WHAT THE !#*&@ IS NIBBLER?!?!?!” That’s the fun question…and I will explain.
Nibbler is a game from Rock-Ola Mfg. Corp. released in 1983. It’s a very basic, yet challenging, game. You are a snake going around in a Pac-Man type board eating up gems. As you get the gems, your body starts to grow longer and the object is to not hit yourself. Just like that old game on your flip phone but adding a maze. But since he had the Atari 2600, he has never looked back and owned some of the greatest home machines, NES, SNES, GENESIS, Turbo Graphix 16, GameBoy, Game Gear, Lynx, Playsation 1,2,3,4 and Vita, XBOX, Gamecube, and N64...just to name a few. Brad is also a reviewer for Mobile Beat Magazine as well as a freelance videographer, part time disc jockey, performing artist and photographer. But has a true love is for video games and Star Wars, as he is a member of the 501st Central Garrison. His ultimate dream is to own a fully working pinball machine and arcade machine. Difficult to say which one, but a Star Wars one would be nice start.
